Harold K.L. Foundation Continues 'Kanikapila in Kailua' Series with Musical Group Kaukahi | Arts & Culture

Following the successful debut of the Kanikapila in Kailua music series last month, the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation announced that the musical group Kaukahi will be taking the stage for the June 16 performance.  Kanikapila in Kailua is a monthly program that celebrates the Hawaiian music and culture of Windward Oahu. It is held one Saturday a month from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on the second floor of the parking garage near Whole Foods Market in Kailua Town. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs, grab food from their favorite Kailua eatery and sit back and relax.

Kaukahi features four talented musicians, including Walt Keale (‘ukulele and vocals), cousin to the late Hawaiian artist Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole, affectionately known as “Bruddah Iz.” Kawika Kahiapo (guitar/vocals) has been on the Hawaiian music scene since 1978 and has contributed his talents on more than 55 recordings, including with Jack Johnson. Other band members include Barrett Awai (upright bass/vocals) and Dean Wilhelm (guitar/vocals). Kaukahi (the name in Hawaiian means “singleness of purpose”) launched in 2004 to share Hawaii’s spirit and lifestyle with others. The group performs original music blending contemporary and traditional Hawaiian sounds. 

Through its grantmaking, the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation builds on the strengths of Windward Oahu communities by supporting the region's rich cultural legacy, its youth and families, and its natural resources. In the spirit of this mission, the Foundation, together with Kahiapo, a noted Windward Oahu-based musician, created this Hawaiian music performance series.  “We are honored to have such musical gems share their talent at our Kanikapila in Kailua so people can experience the wonderful songs that tell the story of Hawaii,” said Terry George, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation. 

The first Kanikapila in Kailua performance took place on May 19 and featured Waipuna, a Na Hoku Hanohano award nominee. Below are dates for upcoming performances:

September 22: Weldon Kekauoha
October 20: Led Kaapana & Mike Kaawa
November 17: Cyril Pahinui
