Attend a Free Solar Energy Seminar at Kailua Library on July 31

With the cost of electricity rising, more Hawaii homeowners and business owners are considering solar energy to help reduce their electricity bills.  A free Solar Energy Seminar will be presented by a local solar company at Kailua Public Library on Tuesday, July 31 at 6:30 p.m. under the Reading Tree.

Learn how solar energy works, what solar systems are available, how to determine which system is best for your needs, find out about solar energy tax credits, and how solar can save money on your electricity bill.

The 45-minute informational seminar is suitable for ages 12 and older.  Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

Sunetric, Hawaii's leading solar design and installation company, will install a 121-kilowatt (KW) photovoltaic (PV) system this summer at the Big Island orchard of Island Princess Macadamia Nut Company, allowing the gourmet food products company to add solar energy to its extensive array of sustainable farming practices.

Honolulu-based Island Princess will use the fixed ground-mount system to power its macadamia nut processing facility, located on the company's 1,100-acre orchard at Keaau on the Big Island.

Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation to hold its 50th Annual Hawaii State Farm Fair this Weekend July 7-8

Event will be held at Kualoa Ranch for the first time in its 50 year history

This weekend the Department of Agriculture will present the Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation’s 50th annual Hawaii State Farm Fair, in partnership with the 4-H Livestock Council at Kualoa Ranch. This is the first time the event is being held at Kualoa Ranch and the event is free for children and students of all ages and $5 for the general public.

The event will feature live animals, demonstrations, food samples and interactive displays both Saturday and Sunday. Visit the Ag-Tastic Expo that will include the next generation of island farmers who grow tomatoes and squash, herbs, papaya, corn, mushrooms, taro, lavender, internationally-recognized award-winning coffee and more.  The farmers featured this year are:

Ironwood Tree Removal on North Kalaheo Avenue

The following information is provided by City & County of Honolulu:

A Department of Parks and Recreation Urban Forestry Division contractor will remove an Ironwood tree at 178 North Kalaheo Avenue in Kailua on July 5 and 6, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The tree is being removed due to fire damage and will be replaced.

Motorists are advised that only one lane will be open to traffic and special duty police officers will be on scene to assist with traffic control.
