Governor Releases $92.8 Million for Highways, Airports and Harbors

Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $92.8 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) designed to maintain, upgrade and expand transportation infrastructure across Hawaii.

"Our highways, airports and harbors are essential to island commerce and our way of life; everyone depends on the daily reliability and functionality of this core infrastructure," said Governor Abercrombie.

The Rim of Pacific Exercises (RIMPAC), the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise, is back in Hawaii for the biennial event and will take place around our shores until August 3.

Due to this event, the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has advised that for reasons concerning public safety daytime activities at Bellows Beach Park, including swimming and picnicking, will not be allowed while the RIMPAC exercises take place.  

Consequently the campsites will also be closed. No camping permits will be available for issue during the weekends of July 13 to 15 and July 27 to 29.

However, camping permits are available for the weekend of July 20 to 22.

STATE TRANSFERS WAIMANALO WWTP TO CITY

 

(Mon., April 2, 2012) – The state of Hawaii signed a Cooperative Agreement last Friday with the City and County of Honolulu to transfer ownership of the Waimanalo Wastewater Treatment Plant to the City.

 

The facility, located at 41-1060 Kalanianaole Highway in Waimanalo, was built in 1969 and placed in service in 1972 by the state's Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR).  The City's Department of Environmental Services operated the plant under a 1972 agreement with DLNR.

The following information is provided by the Department of Parks and Recreation Windward District:

Parts of the Kailua Beach Park shoreline, between the boat ramp and Ka'elepulu Stream, will close temporarily beginning Monday, March 19, 2012, through Friday, March 23, 2012, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily for sand replenishment.  The boat ramp and the unimproved boat parking lots will be closed as well.

The City will augment the beach with sand from Ka'elepulu Stream.

Windward Mall Announces Arrival of Sports Authority

Windward Mall is pleased to announce that Sports Authority will become one of their new anchor stores. The national sporting goods retailer will open its first location on the Windward side in time for the 2012 holiday season. Sports Authority will move into a 26,657-square-foot space that formerly housed Borders.

“Sports Authority is a great fit for Windward Mall and complements our current retail mix,” said Alex Kirley, marketing manager at Windward Mall. “Windward residents are extremely active and athletic, and now they will have an even wider selection of athletic apparel and sports equipment close to home.”

Sports Authority currently has five locations in Hawaii with a new location in Hilo planned for later this summer making the Windward Mall location number seven in the state. Sports Authority will make announcements regarding hiring and grand opening events in the near future.

Earth Day community service project underway Saturday, April 23

The Earth Day Community Service Project is this Saturday, April 23.

Another way to participate is to donate non-perishable foods for the Hawaii Food Bank Drive. They will also take money donations. The donation site will be set up in the triangle opposite the Model Airplane Field on Kapa'a Quarry Road in Kailua.

Kailua farmers' market offers fresh, local foods and crafts

The Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation presents Thursdays @ Kailua tonight, April 7, from 5 - 7:30 p.m.

Today's market specials are Big Island Abalone serving up locally-grown fresh abalone on shell, grilled on the hibachi, Windward harvest honey from Nalo Meli, a variety of veggies, herbs, Asian specialty greens and seasonal tropical fruits from Thursday's feature farm, Pit Farm, and a diverse range of potted plants to market including orchids, herbs and vegetable starters, flowers, citrus dwarf trees and cacti from Growing Creations.
