Got school spirit? Windward Mall is giving Windward schools a chance to show their spirit and win great prizes! “Loud and Proud” starts off with a social media campaign where the public has the opportunity to nominate their favorite Windward elementary, intermediate or high schools. The top 20 schools nominated will then compete and show their school spirit via Windward Mall’s Facebook Page. The promotion will culminate with a live pep rally on August 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Windward Mall where the winners will be announced.

“This is a fun way to kick off the new school year,” says Alex Kirley, marketing manager of Windward Mall.  “We’re excited about our spirit rally on August 27 and invite the whole community to come out and support Windward students, teachers and schools!”

Teacher pleads no contest to injuring student with hammer

Teacher pleads no contest to injuring student with hammer

A Kailua High teacher accused of throwing a hammer at one of his students pleaded no contest Monday.

David Izumi, 51, was scheduled to go to trial on the misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault. But his lawyer told Hawaii News Now that he decided not to fight the charge.

Family, friends and students showed up at the Kaneohe District Courthouse to show their support for Izumi.

The hammer struck a boy who suffered a gash to his head that required several stitches. The incident occurred during a woodworking class in April.

Izumi's attorney has said it was a reckless, not intentional, act carried out by a man who was under extreme stress.

The defendant is asking for a deferral, which is an opportunity to keep the conviction off his record.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 28.
