DCK PACIFIC CONSTRUCTION HELPS TARGET RENOVATE BLANCHE POPE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL LIBRARY

The effort to give the library at Blanche Pope Elementary School a complete makeover received a lot of help from the community. More than 150 people from various Hawaii companies have donated their time and talent to transform the Waimanalo school library, which was selected by Target Corporation, in partnership with The Heart of America Foundation, for the fully paid renovation work. An unveiling ceremony was held today at the school, as the library was unveiled to students, faculty, parents and community members.

Among those doing the heavy lifting was dck pacific construction, LLC, a dck worldwide company. Project Manager William Maguire said about 25 dck pacific employees worked on demolishing the existing flooring; installed bookshelves, desks, partitions and furniture; and hung various wall treatments including tack boards, inspirational signage, picture frames and plaques.

The Harold K.L. Castle Foundation announced Thursday it will donate $10 million to Hawaii's public schools over the next four years.

The contribution will help support the state's planned education transformation and attain goals in its Race to the Top plan.

"Now is the time to transform our system into one that truly puts children first, builds teaching into a respected and effective profession, and recruits, trains and supports principals and complex area superintendents to create an organizational culture based on high performance," said Mitch D'Olier, president and CEO of the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation.

The Castle Foundation made the announcement at the Royal School library Thursday morning to a class of fifth graders who will graduate from high school in 2018 -- the state's deadline for goals set in its Race to the Top plan.

More than 400 Blanche Pope Elementary School students, staff, community leaders and Target volunteers will be present for the unveiling ceremony and tour of the school library’s dramatic makeover on Monday, May 23.

The unveiling of the redesigned library is part of the Target School Library Makeover program, and one of the many ways Target acts locally to help kids learn and schools teach.

The Target School Library Makeover program is also one way Target is helping to address the education crisis in America and put more children on the path to graduation. Since the Target School Library Makeover program's inception in 2007, the company has transformed 76 school libraries across the country and donated tens of thousands of volunteer hours to support these projects.

Through programs like this one, Target is on track to reach a total of $1 billion in giving to education, with a focus on reading, by the end of 2015.
